Microeconomics is one of the dreaded subjects in a student’s high school years. When you hear anything related to economics, you will think of complicated and long calculation formulas that require specialized knowledge and years of research. But in reality, the AP Microeconomics course doesn’t require that level of complexity, but rather practical knowledge and economic theories rather than practice. What makes AP Microeconomics difficult for students?
In terms of difficulty, AP Microeconomics is not difficult but also not easy in the process of studying and taking the exam. Compared to other AP subjects such as AP Physics and AP Chemistry, AP Micro has a much lower difficulty.
The main reason why AP Micro is difficult is that these are quite unfamiliar knowledge for the average high school student. Compared to classes like AP Calculus or AP Lang, you’ve taken math and English classes before, so you’ll be more familiar, but most students have not been exposed to Economics their entire life.
However, the College Board has overcome this by building the curriculum based on the basic knowledge of the subject. For example, the College Board knows that most students have not studied economics, so the first unit of both AP Macro and AP Micro’s material is titled “Basic Economic Concepts” to help introduce students to the new subject.
